This device works can work well depending on the version you have. If the sereal number ends in J or later you are probably ok. They had some issues with power supplies and connections getting oxidized. It also doesn't have a stand alone mixer to do some of your own low latency routing.
I have often had issues with it disconnecting on several Windows machines using XP. There is a coreaudio driver you can download for Mac and a ASIO driver that you can use for Windows to allow you to use this with other softwares including things such as iTunes for your first two outs at least.
The coreaudio driver I have found to be less stable then the windows Asio driver. The neat thing is you can enable direct monitoring with the ASIO driver which is something you can't even do with it in the software it was designed for which is Pro Tools.
If you want to run Pro Tools LE and other software as well this is a good choice. However if you are mainly concerned with running other software other than Pro Tools I would stay away from this as you will have much more flexablity and stability and in many cases quality of pre's and converters for you money with something like RME's Fireface, Presonus Firepod and I wouldn't rule out MOTU entirly either.
If I was using another software than Pro Tools I would use something by MOTU in a heartbeat over this. Also be aware that even though this interface is listed as 96K compatable if you want to use the ADAT it is limited to only 48kHz. Digidesign didn't implement SMUX which allows you to cut your channels in half to double the sample rate (i.e. 4 channels of audio instead of 8 when at 96kHz).
The main outs, monitor & headphone outs are all hardwired to output 1 & 2, so don't plan on using the headphone outs as headphone sends for recording if you want individual control. You can use a separate headphone amp for that and run out any of the other analog pairs or get another ADAT to analog out to get the other 8 digital outs. You do have two additional ins and outs through S/PDIF for a total of 18 simultateous ins and outs. See the link for more details in this area.
